Tom Foster started in insurance straight from further education and has already risen to senior reinsurance technician at Ambant.

How did you get into insurance?

I have always been familiar with insurance as my parents worked in the industry for a number of years, as a result I had knowledge of insurance. Once I left further education, I wanted to build a career from the background I had.

What has been the biggest challenge in your career to date?

Becoming part of the projects team here at Davies-owned Ambant; it’s the perfect environment to acquire knowledge and skills in the industry. From week to week I’ll be working on different projects, immersing myself in differing areas of reinsurance. Not only do I have client’s expectations that I need to meet, I have to maintain the reputation Davies has built in the market over the years.

What would be your advice to other newcomers in the industry?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. As a newcomer there is no expectation for you to know everything straight away. By asking the right questions and taking on board the answers, you will pick things up quickly. Furthermore, take in as much knowledge from the people around you as you can, they are the greatest source for learning you have.

Where do you hope to be in 10 years?

I would like to be managing my own team in the market. Recently I have been exposed to some of the managerial aspects of running a team against a project, which has given me an insight into management. Over the coming years I hope to build on that and test myself further.

What achievement are you most proud of?

I recently won an internal CEO award. To be put forward by my colleagues and peers was truly humbling and something I am immensely proud of. It was completely out of the blue, but a true honour to have won, and makes me want to strive for more.
