Data is a critical resource for any business\u2014driving decision-making, innovation, and competitive advantage. However, organisations that generate a large volume of data, or utilise complex datasets, often face significant challenges in managing their data effectively. <\/span>Without a robust data management framework in place, this task can quickly become overwhelming. What is data architecture?<\/h2>\n

Data architecture is the framework that manages data within an organisation. <\/span>It comprises the structure, interaction, and management of a business\u2019s data assets. It also considers\u00a0how these elements feed into the organisation\u2019s overall objectives and strategy.<\/p>\n

More specifically, it focuses on the rules and processes for standardising how to collect, store, and use data as it flows through the organisation. It determines how data is identified to support data discovery\u2014what data there is, where it\u2019s stored, and what are the different data fields that exist\u2014and how data is defined, to support the understanding of it. <\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

With data architecture guiding the design and implementation of systems for managing, storing, and retrieving data, it plays a critical role in shaping how data is handled across the organisation. As such, there are overarching principles for effective data management that need to be considered:<\/p>\n

  1. Data quality:<\/span><\/b> Ensuring data is accurate, consistent, complete, and timely.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Data security:<\/span><\/b> Protecting data from unauthorised access, modification or loss.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Data accessibility:<\/span><\/b> Making data readily available to authorised users in an efficient manner.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. Data governance:<\/span><\/b> Implementing policies, procedures and roles to manage data at all points of its lifecycle.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. Data integration:<\/span><\/b> Connecting and combining data into a single, unified view.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    In addition, data architecture principles also call for data to be flexible, scalable, and cost effective.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    What is the relationship between enterprise data and data architecture? How do they differ?<\/h2>\n

    Enterprise architecture and data architecture <\/span>are <\/span>closely related<\/span> disciplines within the wider field of information technology and organisational management. <\/span>They <\/span>operate<\/span> at <\/span>a <\/span>different<\/span> s<\/span>cope and<\/span> level. B<\/span>oth <\/span>are also crucial for ensuring an organisation\u2019s IT <\/span>and business <\/span>infrastructure <\/span>remains<\/span> aligned with its business goals and <\/span>operates<\/span> efficiently.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

    Enterprise Architecture (EA)<\/h3>\n

    This framework is used to manage and align an organisation\u2019s IT assets, people, operations, and projects to its overall business goals.<\/span> It is an umbrella term used to refer to four key domains<\/span> (or, architecture<\/span> types<\/span>) that sit within it.
